I’ve been planning different ways to wear my new Corral boots that I got before Christmas. I know that sounds crazy, because a person can usually just decide to wear something, and not a lot of planning goes into it. But the thing is, I’m almost six months’ pregnant, and there is nothing in my current wardrobe of maternity pants and flowing tops that can be worn with my new boots. I am counting down the days until I can wear regular clothes again!
I have looked through Pinterest layouts and fashion blogs, and while some of the pictures I’ve found of outfits you can wear with cowboy boots don’t appeal to me, boots are pretty versatile and can be worn with everything from dressy outfits to everyday clothes. I spent this afternoon drawing some sketches to show my take on How To Wear Cowgirl Boots.
The first look is what I call the authentic working cowgirl. This sort of outfit demands to be accompanied by a functional western boot—nothing else will do! The jeans are usually fairly straight legged, stacked a little above the spurs, covered with chinks or chaps, and paired with a wool vest, long-sleeved button up western shirt, and a wild rag. It’s the buckaroo look, and is very popular in the western states (Idaho, Wyoming, Arizona, and California), especially with those who love the old vaquero style of riding. You won’t see this look on the street, but in the horse world it is not unlikely to see cowgirl boots worn this way.
My second look is a more modern cowgirl approach, with skinny jeans tucked into cowboy boots, a plaid shirt, and western accessories. One blog post I read said to avoid pairing country-themed accessories with boots because it can result in a cowgirl costume look, but I think if you really are a cowgirl, it’s just fine to look the part. I love the wild colors you can get on the boot shafts these days, and the lime green over brown ones are my favorite. I don’t own a pair of skinny jeans, but with boots like these, how could you cover up the tops by putting boot-cut jeans over them? I would definitely try a skinny or very straight leg jean so the tops would show!Next I went completely the other way—cowgirl boots with dark leggings, a scoop-necked tee, and flowing sweater. Leggings are another look I have never tried, mainly because I feel that it requires a certain body type (let’s just say that at six months’ pregnant, I am a far cry from the model in this drawing!) and I don’t think they’re appropriate without wearing a long shirt over them. But I love this look, and if by some miracle I lose a bunch of weight in the future, this is something I would wear with my new cowgirl boots:If I were to pick a favorite, this next one would be it. This is the cutest way to wear your cowgirl boots—a simple white eyelet skirt with a chambray shirt or denim jacket. Accessorize any way you like, because everything goes with it! I love the simplicity of the white skirt. A lot of the fashion advice I found on wearing cowboy boots said to wear them with denim shorts, but I like this look so much better.A great look that is becoming very popular for weddings is a lace dress or sundress with cowboy boots. My cousin got married last summer in an outdoor ceremony, and the bridesmaids all wore heels for the ceremony, then changed into cowgirl boots for the dance. I thought their ivory dresses were even cuter once they put their western boots on! So this is a look for a party or wedding: wear your boots with a lacy or sequined skirt, a sundress with a light sweater, or a glitzy top and dark jeans. This final look is the only one I feel completely comfortable with, because it’s really the only one I’m used to so far. I normally wear my cowgirl boots with plain old boot-cut jeans and a tee shirt. And while I am willing to step out of my comfort zone and try some new styles, I’m guessing that this is the one I’ll come back to over and over again, because it really is the most comfortable! I love my new boots, and I love the simple life of being a cowgirl.
