I’ve taken a break from the ridin’
My saddle is gatherin’ dust.
It’s not that I’m done
With the work or the fun,
But I’m takin’ some time to adjust.
My horses, they’re all just free-loaders.
Ain’t none of ’em worked in a year.
I got three I should sell,
They just stand in the corral
An’ wait for their feed to appear.
I know I should be out there trainin’,
Their whole lives are just slippin’ by
And I know it’s just wrong
That their hooves are so long,
And they haven’t been wormed since July.
I’m just sittin’ here dreaming of horses
An’ wishin’ for that happy day
When this baby is grown
With a horse of his own,
An’ we both can go ridin’ away.

Our third child was born in January—a boy, and we’ve been so excited about him! Having a child definitely changes your life, no matter if it’s the first or the fifteenth. I grew up with six siblings, and never aspired to have such a large family, but I always wanted to be a mom, and having three kids is definitely a dream come true.
Being pregnant all last summer really put a stop to my riding. I have ridden horses while pregnant, but of the horses we have now, only one is deemed safe enough by my husband for me to ride while carrying a child, and it has just been so busy we have done nothing with the horses except feed them and try to maintain their health through the winter.
But today is the first day of spring, and I have really been wanting to get out and ride! The wind chill is about ten below, though, so I’m not going to today….maybe next week. Spring always brings a long list of things that need done: we need to work on the horse’s fencing around their lot, all five of them need their hooves trimmed, the colt needs groundwork done, and they all need ridden! I don’t expect to get caught up for a long time.
My days are filled with getting the baby to sleep and cleaning up after him. It seems like every time I get a clean outfit on him he either spits up all over the front or his diaper fails at the other end. He is precious though, and just one smile from him makes up for the hours he keeps me awake at night.
I’m hoping to get back to my horse life someday. Until then, I’ll just keep writing about it.
